Jonah Crab
This crab traveled quite a distance from behind that hill in the background to find this fish head. Clearly they hunt by scent. You can almost see the triumphant expression on his face when he catches sight of the prize. Then there is the problem of catching hold of it. This episode occurred in about 50 feet of water on one of the off-shore ledges in the Casco Bay.

This crab in about 12 feet of water slowly approached the ROV and simply climbed on board. The pilot lifted off and carried it up a few feet before it decided to abandon the ride.

Crabs are among the most entertaining of the animals we encounter. They seem to often be engaged in some crab business we don't understand. This individual was dancing on his hind legs. At first we thought it was reaching for something under the mud. I think we finally decided that it was scraping its shell on the rock behind it.

Crabs sometime attack the ROV. In this case we think the attack was provoked because the ROV invaded his space.

After the crab seen above abandoned its attack on the ROV, it came back for another close look. It provided good opportunity to see the working parts of a crab.

Even a gang of lobsters shows some respect to a realy big Jonah crab. This crab drove three lobsters off the bait bag initially before allowing one of them to work the back side of the bag.
